Most people think of a laxative as just a pill that makes you go, without really considering how it works to overcome your body’s resistance. There are different types of laxatives, each working in its own way. Generally, laxatives fall into three main categories: osmotic laxatives, stimulant laxatives, and bulk-forming laxatives.

What are Osmotic Laxatives?

Osmotic laxatives draw fluid into the intestines, a process that can take several days. This added fluid content in the stool helps to move the blockage by essentially turning it into diarrhea. However, osmotic laxatives can lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and even cramping and bloating due to gas buildup.

What are Stimulant Laxatives?

Stimulant laxatives contain harsh, sometimes toxic chemicals or herbs that cause the intestinal muscles to spasm and contract. While they work quickly, usually within a few hours, they can also cause diarrhea, dehydration, and gas-related pain similar to osmotic laxatives. Overuse of stimulant laxatives can lead to long-term damage to the sensitive intestinal linings. Additionally, the intestines can become dependent on these laxatives to function, potentially leading to a condition known as “lazy bowel syndrome,” which is chronic constipation due to a loss of bowel muscle tone and strength.

What are Bulk-Forming Laxatives?

Bulk-forming laxatives use absorbent materials, typically dead fiber, to increase the overall mass of the stool. As the stool increases in size, the bowels are stimulated to push it out. While fiber and increased stool mass are generally beneficial, bulk-forming laxatives can sometimes further clog the bowels. Psyllium, a common ingredient in over-the-counter fiber laxatives, is often used in these products. However, there have been reports of allergic reactions to psyllium, and long-term use may affect the absorption of essential vitamins and minerals.

What’s the Best Alternative?

For dealing with constipation, I recommend using oxygen-based colon cleansers that utilize monatomic oxygen (O1) to safely and effectively clean and liquefy compaction from both the small and large intestines. These can be used regularly without harmful side effects. Oxy-Powder? is the most effective oxygen-based colon cleanser available.

After addressing your constipation, take a moment to evaluate your lifestyle and habits to identify the root cause. If dietary changes are necessary, consider my body cleansing diet, which is designed not only to provide a plan for healthy eating but also to help cleanse your body.
